Injury, Recovery, and the Tension Loop
Injury is not only a physical event. Anyone who has been out for months knows the harder part is often what happens between sessions — the loss of identity, the fear of returning, the way pain narrows your whole world down to itself.
The tension loop
Pain produces tension. Tension increases pain. Both reduce sleep, and poor sleep makes pain worse. It is a genuine loop and it is why two people with identical injuries can have completely different experiences of them.
You cannot always change the injury. You can often change what is happening around it, and the loop is the accessible part.
What the evidence says about hypnosis and pain
Pain management is one of the strongest evidence bases in clinical hypnosis — stronger than most people assume, and used in genuine clinical settings including procedural and burn care.
The mechanism is worth being precise about. It does not remove the source. It changes the experience: the tension around it, the attention paid to it, and the emotional weight attached. That sounds like a small thing until you have lived with chronic discomfort, where it is most of the problem.
Research has also looked at whether hypnosis affects recovery itself — a controlled trial published in the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis examined post-surgical wound healing with promising results. That literature is smaller and less settled than the pain work, and it is worth treating as interesting rather than established.
The return-to-training problem
The other half of injury is coming back. Many people are physically cleared long before they are mentally ready — they protect the limb, hesitate, move differently, and often injure something else compensating.
Mental rehearsal helps here in a specific way: rehearsing the movement while the body cannot perform it maintains the pattern and reduces the strangeness of returning to it. Athletes have used this through rehabilitation for decades.

Please read this part. Pain is information. See a doctor about new, worsening, or unexplained pain, and continue any treatment you have been prescribed. Nothing here diagnoses or treats anything, and a relaxation recording should never be what stands between you and a diagnosis.
