Confidence Outside the Gym
People who are composed in a fight are not always composed at a dinner table. The physical courage and the social kind turn out to be less connected than you would expect, and plenty of capable people are far more comfortable facing an opponent than facing a difficult conversation.
The common mechanism
Underneath both sits the same thing: self-monitoring. The part of your attention that watches you rather than the situation.
In a confrontation it produces hesitation. In a conversation it produces the running commentary — how am I coming across, was that the wrong thing to say, what are they thinking. In intimacy it produces the same commentary at the worst possible moment.
The mechanism is identical. Attention that should be pointed outward is pointed inward, and performance suffers in whatever domain you are in.
Where it shows up
Difficult conversations. Most people avoid them, and the avoidance costs far more than the conversation would. What makes them hard is rarely the content — it is anticipating the other person's reaction and rehearsing defences in advance.
Long relationships. Conflict with people close to us runs on reflex. The same tone, the same defensiveness, the same argument in a slightly different shape. You can only change your half, but that half moves more than people expect.
Intimacy. Self-consciousness is the most common obstacle and the least discussed. Being present rather than observing yourself is the whole thing.
What helps
Attention outward. Genuinely attending to the other person — listening rather than preparing your reply — crowds out self-monitoring, because attention cannot be in both places.
Rehearsal, for conversations too. Athletes rehearse routines. Almost nobody rehearses a difficult conversation, though it is the same skill and works the same way. Familiarity lowers the stress response.
Slowing down. Almost every social mistake is made at speed. A pause costs nothing and is invisible to everyone but you.
The sessions
- Better Relationships — staying calm when a conversation heats up, and listening properly
- Confidence and Intimacy — presence rather than performance
- The Lion — the underlying confidence, which transfers further than people assume
These are self-help recordings. They are not couples therapy, and if a relationship is in real difficulty a qualified therapist is the right place to start.
